Empowering Educators: Strategies for Enhancing Mathematical Literacy among Students

Empowering Educators: Strategies for Enhancing Mathematical Literacy among Students

We would like to invite you to join Dr. Andrew Skelton on Monday September 11 from 2:30-3:30pm via Zoom for a workshop on Empowering Educators: Strategies for Enhancing Mathematical Literacy among Students.

Mathematical Literacy among our students is an enormous issue that has wide-ranging impacts across programs and faculties. My hope with this session is that you will learn a bit more about the student experience from their voices, shine some light on some of the challenges faced by mathematics educators, present some tips and tricks for including effective numeracy lessons in your (perhaps) non-mathematical courses and share some of the resources available to students across campus.

Specifically, this session will:
1. present student survey data on their attitudes towards learning mathematics and concrete metrics on their mathematical preparedness broken down by mathematical topic,
2. share some surprising challenges we face when working with students with varied mathematical backgrounds by using the example of student misconceptions about the meaning of the equal sign,
3. discuss some of the best practices we can apply when trying to improve numeracy skills,
4. outline some of the supports available to students across campus.
